How Quaid-i-Azam University GPA and CGPA are calculated
Quaid-i-Azam University grades absolutely. Its BS regulations publish a fixed table mapping mark ranges to a letter grade and a grade point, so your grade is decided by your own marks rather than by where you sit in the class. The bands are tight, and most are four marks wide. That makes the table worth knowing before results come out.
QAU's grade points are its own. An A- is worth 3.80 and a B- is worth 2.80, both higher than the 3.67 and 2.67 used across most HEC-aligned universities, while B+ is 3.50 and C+ is 2.50. The scale also has no C- and no D+, dropping from C (2.00) straight to D (1.00). Between the raised minus grades and the missing ones, a generic calculator will not reproduce a QAU transcript.
Add one semester at a time, one row per course. You get each semester's SGPA together with the running CGPA up to that semester, plus a transcript-style PDF export when you want the whole record in one place.
The Formula
SGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // one semesterCGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours) // all semestersAn F scores 0.00 grade points but its credit hours stay in the denominator. Results are rounded to two decimal places.
Worked Examples
Example 1: one semester's SGPA
A 15-credit-hour semester using QAU grade points.
| Course 1, 3 CH, A (4.00) | 3 × 4.00 = 12.00 |
|---|---|
| Course 2, 3 CH, A- (3.80) | 3 × 3.80 = 11.40 |
| Course 3, 3 CH, B+ (3.50) | 3 × 3.50 = 10.50 |
| Course 4, 3 CH, B (3.00) | 3 × 3.00 = 9.00 |
| Course 5, 3 CH, C+ (2.50) | 3 × 2.50 = 7.50 |
| Total grade points | 12.00 + 11.40 + 10.50 + 9.00 + 7.50 = 50.40 |
| Total credit hours | 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15 |
Example 2: QAU's A- against the usual 3.67
A student with A- in four 3-credit courses, scored on QAU's table versus a generic HEC table.
| QAU A- is 3.80 | 12 × 3.80 = 45.60 |
|---|---|
| Generic HEC A- is 3.67 | 12 × 3.67 = 44.04 |
| Difference in grade points | 45.60 − 44.04 = 1.56 |
| Effect on a 15-credit semester | 1.56 ÷ 15 = 0.10 |

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is QAU's A- worth 3.80 instead of 3.67?
Because QAU's own statutes set it that way. The university's BS regulations award 3.80 quality points for an A- and 2.80 for a B-, both above the values used by most HEC-aligned universities. B+ is 3.50 and C+ is 2.50, so QAU's scale differs from the common table at several points, not just one.
Does QAU have a C- or D+ grade?
No. The scale runs A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, D and F. Below C (55–59) the next grade is D (50–54), worth 1.00. There is no C- and no D+ in between, so the gap between a C and a D is a full grade point.
How are marks distributed across a QAU course?
Each credit hour carries 50 total marks, divided equally between sessional assessment and the terminal examination. A three-credit course therefore carries 150 marks, half from sessional work across the semester and half from the terminal paper.
What happens if my CGPA falls below 2.00?
You are placed on probation, and QAU allows three chances to remain on probation across the whole BS programme. If your CGPA falls below 1.00 at the end of any semester, you are dropped from the university rolls. For first-semester students, that first GPA is what counts here.
Does an F count towards my QAU CGPA?
Yes. An F contributes 0.00 grade points while its credit hours remain in the denominator, so it pulls your average down from both sides. Enter it as a normal row with its real credit hours.
Can I work out my grade before results are announced?
Yes. QAU grades absolutely, so the marks bands are fixed and public. Add your sessional and terminal marks, turn the total into a percentage of the course total, and read the letter off the table below. Note how narrow the bands are. Four marks separate an A- from a B+.
